As racing grew in popularity, the types of races changed too. Open events began to feature bigger fields of runners. Eligibility rules were based on the age, sex, and birthplace of the horses. Some races were also geographically limited, with only a few races in certain counties allowed for horses with certain winning percentages. Other races were made only open to horses owned by owners. And, for the first time, the St. Leger was held in New York City.
Harness racing
Originally, the ancient Assyrians used horses for war and hunting, but the practice was eventually expanded to harness racing. Homer’s account of chariot races in the 7th century bc refers to four-horse hitches. In earlier years, two-hitch races were also held. Horses were locally bred and imported from Asia Minor and northern Africa. Harness racing quickly spread throughout Europe and the Americas.

It first debuted in 1776, when the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and a British Army officer named Anthony St. Leger teamed up to introduce the race to the British racing calendar. Originally known as a sweepstake for 25 Guineas, the race was run over two miles and was won by a filly by the name of Allabaculia.
Oaks
The Oaks horse race is a classic, storied event. It first took place in 1779, and was held for three-year-old fillies. The winner, Bridget, was sired by Herod, a descendant of Byerly Turk. Her dam, Jemima, was by Snap, a descendant of Darley Arabian. Others who have won the race include Matchem Middleton, Princess Rooney, and Real Delight.
Derby
The Derby horse race was first held on a Thursday in late May or early June, depending on Easter. In 1838, the Derby was moved to the first Wednesday of June, following the moveable feast. From then until 1995, the Derby was run on the first Wednesday of June. During World War I and the Second World War, the Derby was run on a Tuesday, and from 1945 to 1996 it was held on a Saturday.
